The Shinobi Tsukamaki series is our entry level full Tsukamaki style knife. These knives are made as their name would suggest, to mirror the ideals of the Shinobi, the “ninja” of feudal Japan, who valued practical, usable tools that could do the work over heavily adorned and highly decorative features.
The Shinobi range is therefore our most “practical” Tsukamaki, with subdued colours, satin finishes and less exotic materials. The blades are finished with our Satin Blued treatment for practicality and for its less light reflective properties. The Shinobi Tsukamaki knives are still wrapped in the traditional methods, very tightly using Silk Tsukaito and washi paper hishigami so that they are functional and usable for EDC. Although you could also lacquer or resin coat the handles, this is a choice we leave up to the user, as resin can discolour the silk.
Shinobi Shrike’s are free hand ground from thick stock 80Crv2 in either the “standard” 1 & 3/4 Double Edge configuration or a Single Edge with swedge, favouring the Pikal orientation heavily. Long time followers will know that the Shrike is our flagship knife and the original design we began with, now in its 5th generation, it is near perfect in our opinion as a defensive knife capable of dealing with almost anything put in its path. A hallmark of all our blades is the thick steel stock which helps us to produce a robust blade tip. We like a knife that can drive through tougher materials and not be hindered when encountering harder organic materials like bone, or parts of clothing like buckles, zips and metal snaps.
The Shrike is also ergonomically considered and is indexed for use in the Pukal grip, with the tip aligning perfectly with the knuckles of the hand, making targeting feel natural. The handle is not too long, fitting fully in most hands to ensure minimal risk of snagging on clothes during accessing, and reducing the possibility of injuring yourself during stripping actions.
The handle of the Shinobi Shrike is built from a synthetic base of solid Carbon Fiber for some extra elegance, which is machined to have softened edges, and satin finished. The rest of the handle is entirely done by hand in the traditional methods. The Samegawa (the sting ray skin) is cut from raw hide skins imported from Japan, polished by hand and lacquered black. We only use high quality samegawa skins which have the nodes intact. The tsukaito is high grade silk ito, also imported from Japan and is wrapped in the Hindi-Maki style, using washi paper underneath the knots. The knot work is finished with traditional end knots which tie through the rear of the handle, creating the Omote and Ura knots.
This is a handle which perfectly blends modern materials and techniques with traditional hand craft, with the tsukaito available in either black or brown silk.
Finally, each Shinobi Shrike is fitted with a Tier 1 Kydex Sheath which accommodates either Soft Loops or DCC HLR Clips for your preferred carry method, and has an adjustable retention system which means you can customise it to your liking.
The Shinobi Tsukamaki Shrike is a great entry into our most beloved handle, remaining practical for EDC use while giving you a characterful knife that will be a constant companion at your side
