The Shrike was initially conceived by designer Gavin Coleman in early 2017 as a purpose made defensive knife. During this time Gavin was heavily involved in the development of The Maul system with co-founder Schalk Holloway. The experiences of this development and combative exploration was a major influencing factor in the design of the Shrike.
The Pikal style was chosen for the Shrike due to its simplicity of function, but also its devastatingly destructive ability. The Pikal configuration offers the user the ability to deliver severe damage to an opponent with very base, and quite instinctive movement patterns. This style of knife has since become a hallmark of Ironside Edge Works’ and one of our specialties.
The Shrike has undergone several designer iterations since 2017. The latest Mk V version has been available since August 2021. The Shrike is made intentionally handle heavy. This weight bias towards the user’s hand gives the knife a certain security, as well as adding a small amount of mass to the strike. The handle itself is profiled to be extremely ergonomic, and user comfort has become a hallmark of our work because of this ground-breaking design.
The blade length is kept optimal, just about 3 inches in length. While many opt for larger blades, we feel this is a practical and usable length. Allowing most people to easily conceal carry the knife, with the blade length remaining wholly functional for its purpose. The bevels are hand-ground to a Robust working edge, making it sharp, but still able to withstand the rigours of combat.
The Shrike is made to be a hard-use defensive knife. The thick steel stock ensures both the tip and edge are well supported and can hold up to the stresses of combative use. This is not a delicate paper-cutter, but designed to rip through organic matter and not roll or chip when hitting bone or harder clothing materials like zippers, buttons and buckles.
The Tier 2 Tsukamaki version gives the Shrike some real class! The Tsukamaki handle is something we have worked on for many years, using traditional (and non traditional) Japanese materials and techniques to produce a modern take on the traditional Japanese sword handle. We use high quality silk Ito (cord) and high grade Samegawa (ray skin) to create these exquisite pieces.
This Tsukamaki handle is called “Gaijin”, a Japanese word translating roughly to “Outsider”. This configuration blends modern materials with the traditional Tsukamaki. The fittings are made from Carbon Fiber which as been given a satin polish. The Samegawa is black lacquered, and the wrap completed with Black silk ito. The blade of this Shrike is polished to a satin finish and given a cold blue chemical etch to create a dark blue patination on the blade.
The Shrike comes with a full Kydex sheath for secure concealed carry and is fitted with a Discreet Carry Concepts 5.1 HLR Gear Clip as standard.
The Shrike is our best-selling model for a reason. It is where it all started and is a Divine Companion to many around the world.
