The Shrike, the most vicious little bird. Like its namesake, this blade will impale and butcher...
/ʃrʌɪk/ - a songbird with a strong sharply hooked bill, known for impaling its prey on thorns.
The Ironside Edge Works Shrike was first conceived in 2017 and stands as the original Pikal knife I designed for my defensive carry needs. The Shrike has since evolved and become a formidable option for anyone who needs an easily concealable full size defensive knife.
The Shrike is a purpose made Pikal knife, designed to be used in reverse grip (tip down) with the primary edge facing the user. For those unfamiliar with this style, the Pikal grip gives the user a very devastatingly affective approach to defensive knife use, particularly in countering ambush style attacks. The configuration and orientation of the blade allows the use of very base, almost primal body movements and mechanics – powerful downward stabbing motions are combined with pulling actions against the primary edge of the blade. The result can be very devastating deep lacerations and wound channels which very effectively reduce an attacker’s will to fight, and can end an altercation quickly.
This custom Shrike is available in either the standard 1 and 3/4 edge configuration, a full double edge option, or a single edge configuration as desired. The edge geometry is a hybrid of Flat grinding and Convex grinding. The primary Pikal edge is ground flat to produce a very sharp edge, while the supporting edge is ground Convex to retain some mass at the point. This increases the tip strength of double edged versions, should the blade come into contact with harder materials like bone, which is entirely likely in the event of defensive use. The Shrike is also weighted specifically to be more handle heavy. This puts the centre of mass within the palm of your hand and lends mass to downward stab. Additionally the tip is neutrally indexed, meaning it requires no manipulation of your wrist to orient the point of the blade for an optimal position, the point will go where your hammer-fist goes.
The handle of the Shrike can be finished in a variety of options. All options are ergonomically considered and are effective in their function. However, aesthetically everyone has a preference, and aesthetics are also important. We offer a range of choices in G10, Carbon Fiber, Exotic Wood or our full Tsukamaki handle wrap which is our specialty. The full Tsukamaki option includes colour choices for the Silk Ito (Cord), the Samegawa (ray skin) as well as material choices for the fittings (Fuchi & Kashira). Additionally a decorative copper or brass liner can be added to any of the handle options for a bit of extra flair.
The Shrike is offered with a choice of either a Full Kydex Sheath or slightly more compact Fold-Over Kydex Sheath, and is supplied with a Discreet Carry Concepts Mod 5.1 HLR Clip. Additional carrying and mounting options are also available, including Pocket Hook Sheaths and Static Line Sheaths if you prefer. Each sheath is made as a bespoke item for your individual knife and is pressed and finished by hand to provide the best fit and retention for the blade, as well as to ensure comfort in concealed carry.
Finally, the blade is honed and sharpened by hand on Japanese water stones to produce an exceptionally sharp polished edge.

HANDLE & MOUNTING OPTIONS
The Shrike is made with a variety of handle configuration and materials.
A complete traditional Japanese Tsukamaki style wrap uses Japanese Silk Ito or leather Ito cord which is wrapped over a layer of colour lacquered Samegawa, traditional sting ray leather used on Japanese swords. The Tsukamaki wrap is executed in a traditional Hineri-Maki pattern before terminating at the end of the handle in traditional termination knots through the Kashira.
The Silk Ito is sealed with clear resin to weather proof and cement it in place and provides a long lasting grip. Leather Ito is sometimes also used, although less common, and is left in its natural state un-coated.
