Apprentice Knifemaker

If you are interested in becoming a professional Knifemaker this is the opportunity for you. We have an opening available for an Apprentice which will provide you with all the technical skill and experience you need to make knives professionally.

This is the perfect opportunity for recent school leavers or any young person looking to start a career in the knife industry. No experience is needed, however this is a traditional apprenticeship and is an unpaid position. You should consider the skills and knowledge you will learn, and our investment in you as a trade.

You will learn:

  • All aspects of the Knifemaking process, from start to finish product
  • Mettelurgy
  • Heat Treating
  • Free-Hand Grinding
  • Handle Making & Ergonomics
  • Tsukamaki
  • Sharpening
  • Sheath Making
  • and more


  • 17 or older
  • Be able to commit 20 hours per week (3 full days or 5 half days)
  • Be in Cape Town, South Africa (Workshop is located in Paarden Eiland)
  • Have an aptitude for working with your hands
  • Be willing to learn

The duration of the Apprenticeship is 12 months. After 6 months a small stipend may be considered to help offset some of your travel costs, etc. At the end of the Apprenticeship period a full time position may be available depending on the outcome of your time with us.
